Chinese New Year, 初五, chu wu

1. People welcome back the God of Wealth on the 5th day of Chinese New Year, which is said to be his birthday, by setting off firecrackers and offering incense.

大 年 初 五 是 财 神 的 生 日,人 们 烧 香 放 炮 迎 接 财 神 到 来 。

2. This day is also commonly known as the Festival of Po Wu, literally breaking five. According to custom, it is believed that many New Year taboos can be broken on this day.
zhè tiān yě bèi chēnɡ wéi“pò wǔ rì”。ɡēn jù xí sú,xǔ duō xīn nián jìn jì ɡuò cǐ rì jiē kě pò。
这 天 也 被 称 为 “破 五 日”。根 据 习 俗,许 多 新 年 禁 忌 过 此 日 皆 可 破。

3. One of the legends tells the story of a prince – the son of the ancient emperor Zhuan Xu. He was only willing to wear rags and eat coarse grains. Even when offered new clothes, he would not wear them until he burnt a hole in them. People called him the “son of poverty.” After he died, people buried him, claiming the day as one to send away the son of poverty.

传 说 中 古 代 帝 王 颛 顼 之 子,性 喜 穿 破 衣 烂 衫 ,吃 粗 粮 ,即 使 有 人 给 他 新 衣 服,他 也 不 穿 ,除 非 在 衣 服 上 烧 个 洞 才 肯 穿 。人 们 称 他 为 “穷 子”。他 死 后 ,人 们 埋 葬 了 他,并 把 这 一 天 当 作 送 “穷 子”的 日 子。
