This year's host is Oatar, which in 2010 beat the United States and Japan to win the right to hold the tournament.

Qatar is home to some 2.9 million people. It is true that Qatar is tiny; at 4,416 square miles, it is 0.12 percent ofthe size ofthe United States and by far the smallest nation ever to host the World Cup.

But this small country is extraordinarily rich. There lies the North Field, the world's largest underwater gas field, which Qatar shares with Iran. The gas field holds approximately 10% of the world's known natural gas reserves.​

While much of the world grapples with recession and inflation, Qatar and other Gulf Arab energy producers are reaping the benefits of high energy prices. The International Monetary Fund expects Qatar's economy to grow by about 3.4% this year.

In order to host the World Cup, Qatar has spent about 220 billion dollars, which is called the "most expensive" World Cup in history.
