YCT Success Story: How Mia Passed YCT Levels 1 and 2
I'm Mia, a 14-year-old Indian-American girl from Texas, and I'm excited to share my journey as a beginner who passed the Youth Chinese Test (YCT) Levels 1 and 2 in Mandarin Chinese.

My First Challenges with Mandarin
At the beginning, learning Mandarin's four tones felt really challenging. I often confused words like 马 (mǎ, “horse”) and 骂 (mà, “scold”) in my early lessons. But with the patient guidance of my teacher, Niki, I gradually improved.
She also taught me practical expressions that made Chinese feel more alive and meaningful, such as 生日快乐! (shēngrì kuàilè, “Happy Birthday!”). She even taught me the catchy Mandarin birthday song. Now, being able to use these phrases with my family and friends makes me feel proud and motivates me to keep learning in ChineseLearning.
How I Prepared for YCT Level 1
With Niki's guidance, I not only learned the structure and strategies for the YCT Level 1 exam, but also received targeted support to improve my test-taking skills. By practicing past exam papers, I became familiar with the format and learned how to identify and correct mistakes more quickly.
Niki's clear explanations helped me better understand grammar and vocabulary, while her extended teaching materials — including real-life dialogues and cultural background — showed me how to use Chinese in practical situations. This systematic approach helped me pass YCT Level 1 with confidence and built a strong foundation for the challenges of YCT Level 2.
Bringing Chinese into Daily Life
Now, I enjoy sharing my growing Mandarin skills with my family. I even teach my younger brother how to greet our Chinese neighbors by saying “你好吗?” (nǐ hǎo ma? – “How are you?”), and we sometimes practice simple dialogues during dinner. Our home has become a lively little Chinese classroom.
Passing YCT Levels 1 and 2
Passing YCT Levels 1 and 2 was an exciting milestone for me, but it is not the end of my journey. Instead, it has made me even more motivated to keep going. I am now preparing for YCT Level 3 with my dedicated teacher, Niki.
What Learning Chinese Has Taught Me
My Chinese learning journey has taught me that interest is one of the best teachers, and that with dedication and persistence, real progress is possible. 加油!(Jiāyóu! – “Keep going!”)
